Happy Mother’s Day to all the different kinds of mamas out there. The peaceful ones and those in turbulence. Those just starting the journey and those deep into the story. Those who carry their babies close and those who are unable. Best wishes to mamas who love the role deeply and those who are barely holding on. Here’s to the mamas who are trying our best and getting better over time.
Let’s celebrate the mama we are, the mamas we came from, and the mamas we want to be for the future. I see you mamas, and I am proud.
This day has always been complicated, but particularly so since I lost my mom on December 4, 2017, two days after my eldest’s 6th birthday. She had just turned 63. I miss her. We didn’t have the relationship that I long for, but I’m learning, what we had was enough and, so, I try to be grateful. Ultimately, my mom gave me the gift of my family and that is worthy of a celebration.
Today, after I mourn for my mom, our mimi, my childhood, I am reminded that I am a mom – not always the most patient or most engaged one, but certainly the best one for which I am able.
If I were really to pause – I would hope to find that my family was
If I were to really look – I’d probably see that my girls are happy and fairly bright, and all things considered pretty good little humans.
Don’t get me wrong, they can be assholes, but who isn’t sometimes.
If I were to really consider – I’d likely find that I’m doing a pretty good job. Sure I’m making plenty of mistakes, but I’m trying my hardest and getting better over time, which seems like a reasonable definition of success.
So today, mamas of every sort, I wish for you a day to celebrate all that you do to keep yourself, your family, and your community going. I wish for you the time to pause and look and consider how what you are doing is valuable and encough and hopefully, adequately seen.
I hope you will consider spending 15 minutes to celebrate mother’s day by starting a little collection of recollections from your past or that of your mom’s. I hope these prompts will inspire you to reminisce and find joy and share humor. I hope this practice of taking some time just for you will be a gift you give to yourself – every day. Being a mama of any kind is hard work, and we all deserve to be celebrated.
